In “Black Myth: Wukong,” meeting special conditions and equipping the Great Sage set and the Ruyi Jingu Bang will grant you a special effect known as the Great Sage Mode. So, what is different about the Great Sage Mode? Below, we bring you the unlocking method and Easter egg introduction for the Great Sage Mode in “Black Myth: Wukong,” hoping to be of help to everyone.
*This text contains spoilers related to the ending, please read at your discretion. Below is an anti-spoiler image.*
About the Great Sage Mode
Here is a brief explanation of the “Great Sage Mode.” There are no tutorials or definitions regarding Great Sage Mode in the game; it is a special term given to a state that players unlock after meeting specific conditions in the third or fourth playthrough, which lasts for a certain period. Therefore, there will be no new cutscenes or extensive dialogues and storylines that have not been seen before in the game. In terms of scale, it is comparable to an Easter egg or a new combat mode. For players who do not particularly focus on combat experience or playstyle, there is no need to push for the third or fourth playthrough.
In the fourth round, the enemy strength will significantly increase compared to the previous rounds, both in terms of damage dealt and health points. This is particularly noticeable from the first encounter; no matter what build we use or how much damage we deal, we can clearly feel that the enemy’s stats have been significantly enhanced. However, it is still possible to use some powerful skill point allocations, equipment setups, and gameplay styles to cope with this, which will not be elaborated on further in this article. Conditions to activate the Great Sage mode
Play through three cycles, completing each with the true ending (defeat all bosses in [Xiaoxitian – Hidden Meishan] before heading to Huaguoshan to touch the stone egg; for detailed steps, please refer to this guide)
Fill all the root organs completely (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind)
Equip the Ruyi Jingu Bang + Divine Treasure Great Sage Set (Divine Treasure Phoenix Wing Purple Gold Crown, Divine Treasure Chainmail Golden Armor, Divine Treasure Emerald Dragon Whip, Divine Treasure Lotus Silk Cloud Step Shoes)
Note: In fact, after leaving [Flame Mountain – Hidden: Bi Shui Cave] in the third chapter, you can go to [Little Western Heaven – Stupa Realm – Stupa Tower] to trigger the plot and enter [Hidden: Mei Mountain]. Therefore, the earliest opportunity to fully upgrade all six points is at the end of the fifth chapter in the third chapter when entering the sixth chapter (the last point is obtained by defeating the final boss of the fifth chapter).
Differences Between the Great Sage Mode and Easter Eggs
After meeting the conditions to activate the Great Sage mode and filling the stick momentum to three segments, an additional gauge will appear on the stick momentum bar. Once the extra stick momentum gauge is filled and unleashed, it can deliver a hit with extremely high damage while playing the melody of the Cloud Palace’s swift sound, triggering Easter egg voice lines. Currently, three types of Easter egg voice lines have been discovered: “Let me show you my skills,” “Children, I’m coming,” and “This is Sun Wukong.” At the same time, the icon in the lower right corner will change to the Great Sage icon, entering Great Sage mode.
The Great Sage mode will last for a period of time, during which the fourth stick stance will be maintained. During this time, each cutting technique will differ from the normal mode, and when attacking, it will also trigger some exclamations that previously mute destiny characters would not say.
Please refer to the image below for the stick force scale and icons in different states.
This article uses the staff skill points as an example; the standing staff, thrusting staff, and staff tricks will have some moves that differ from the normal mode.
In addition, under the conditions to activate the Great Sage mode, encountering specific NPCs will trigger Easter egg dialogues, but other dialogues will not change significantly. For example, when entering the Water Curtain Cave for the sixth time, Zhu Bajie will say, “Big Brother, you’re back,” and so on.
Fourth-Round Attribute and Damage Display
As mentioned above, the overall stats of enemies in the fourth playthrough have significantly increased. Unlike the second and third playthroughs, the difficulty will feel higher right from the first round.
My personal test save file for the fourth playthrough is level 240, with the equipment and skill points as shown in the image below.
When fighting Guangzhi, a normal light stick attack without a critical hit can deal 100-200 damage, and being hit by Guangzhi’s normal attack will roughly take away a quarter of your health. I didn’t capture the screenshot of the ghost cut because he almost one-shot me.
A three-hit combo without a critical hit can deal around 300-400 damage.
After the extra stick momentum bar is fully charged, the damage when activating the Great Sage mode will be much higher. Refer to the blood bar performance in the image below when fighting the Spirit Void Child.
Taking damage from enemies (including regular enemies) will also increase (whether it’s a critical hit or not).
The experience gained from defeating enemies (including regular enemies) is also multiplied.
